George Anthony Phifer of Austin, Texas passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 7, 2017 of heart issues after an extensive day of outside activities. George was 88 years of age.
George was born January 6, 1929 to Mr. and Mrs. George E. Phifer (Annie Alice Malecki) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He left Wisconsin in 1946 to join the United States Army Air Corp. He served proudly and spoke often of his experiences. He was discharged from the service in Austin, Texas at Bergstrom AFB. Seeking a career in Austin, he tried his hand at several sales positions when he discovered his future wife, Johnnie B. Frazier from San Marcos, Texas. They were married on October 14, 1949 at St. Mary's Cathedral in downtown Austin, Texas.
George and Johnnie were married 67 years and he is survived by his wife Johnnie; their four children: Georgia Johnson and husband Ron, Christine Houghton and husband Jon, William Phifer and wife Janis, Craig Phifer and wife Cheryl; seven grandchildren: Christopher Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson Lee, Jessica Houghton Hake, Ryan Houghton, Anne Houghton, Olivia Phifer- Combs and Grant Phifer; and twelve great grandchildren; Annika and Micheal Lee, Sadie, Orlando, Teddy and Ada Hake, Broden and Eli Houghton, Alexander, Christian and Matthew
Johnson, and Matthew Combs.
George Phifer was a retired Austin Police Officer. He joined the Austin Police Department on November 2, 1953 as a patrol officer and retired on December 31, 1992 as the Chief of Police for the City of Austin after 39 years of service.
Funeral services are under the direction of the Cooke-Walden Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 to celebrate George's life. Interment will be at the Assumption Cemetery in Austin, Texas on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 10:00 AM.
George's wishes were to have a small but dignified funeral with the Austin Police Department Honor Guard. His named honorary pallbearers were to be Harvey Gann, Don Doyle (deceased), Rennie Dunn, Ernie Hinkle, and Oliver Houston (deceased) and all retired and present members of the Austin Police Department.
