He devoted his entire career to serving the law, and he did it with a sense of pride and duty that was recognized by all with whom he had the privilege of working.

Judge Campbell was born in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on April 28, 1944 and passed away on February 7, 2018.

He earned his JD from SMU in 1969 and his LLM in Judicial Process from the University of Virginia in 1990. He served as Assistant DA for Harris County and was eventually elected to County Attorney and later District Attorney for Hill County. Judge Campbell had the privilege of working closely with former Governor Mark White as Chief of the Prosecutor's Assistance Division in the Attorney General's office. In 1982, Judge Campbell was elected to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and served until 1994. He served as an Adjunct Professor at Texas State University, Baylor University, and St. Edward's University. He was also a Legal Education lecturer at the University of Texas, Baylor, SMU, and St. Mary's. He authored many scholarly papers during his career including "New Rules of Criminal Evidence". Many of his papers have been archived at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas. He continued to work as a visiting judge for the remainder of his career. He was an avid baseball fan, who also enjoyed reading and travel.

He is survived by his wife Jan deVault, his sister Norma Wright, his daughter Lyn Donner and her husband Patrick, son Bill Campbell and his wife Julia, and son Kirk Campbell, grandson Evan Campbell and granddaughters Cassidy Artavia and Abby Donner.

Visitation is Monday, February 12 from 6-8pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A service honoring the life of Judge Campbell will be held Tuesday, February 13 at 11am at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar, Austin TX. After he is laid to rest at the Texas State Cemetery, we will celebrate his life at the Texas Chili Parlor, 1409 Lavaca St. All are welcome.
